New Pc

Well the old is now retired and the new has been running for a week, thats one hell of a computer with one hell of a job.

Last went 4 years nearly to the day with no issues bar user error, if we get 4 years from this baby ill be happy as.  well that rounded up that job with a happy customer and a total of 2134km door to door and great catching up with Leon, was a quick 4 days and a lot of work to get it all finished

What Another 1000km – South Australia

Friday morning at 5am i headed of  for West Beach SA to set up a new trading PC for Profithog Investments, with a good 3 days work and 1 machine to decommission, 1 to set up and 1 to update.  by Sat arvo we had 90% of the work done with an easy Sunday, Sat lunch was spent down at Glenelg  on an awesome 30 deg day was just great.  with tomorrow to finish up and a 4am start on Monday morning to head home – i have to get my butt into gear and finish this off – to far to drive back , but with technology i could always login with remote support and do the fix.

Next post some images.

Fix My iPhone

Well even thou i was posting in order, i had to post this first.  Last week why in Ballina with Dave from Rescuetech and trashing his house at the house warming, we banged up a new web site for his other business “Fix My Iphone“, well not from trying to finish it, I think the beers got in the way, So today we hooked in and finished it off.

Dave who has been a Mac teckie for many years and the one that got me into Mac some 12 year ago does great work fixing your Iphone, Ipad, and other Mac computers as well as Mac servers and of course all your PC stuff.

5 Days and 2400km

Wednesday 6.30am and it all starts, first stop Condobolin. I had a 9am meeting with a new customer to work out some networking needs to link about 9 pc’s together with a shared folder set up. Once we find out there proper needs we can get them the correct info, even thou they thought they needed a big server to do this job, it came down to a small amount of data shared  with some permissions on a couple of areas.  Doing the home work with the customer, you make sure they get what they want and can solve there problem with a back up program built in for 30% of the cost of a server install which was totally over kill.

Now to JN Straney Real Estate for some help with there new web site with data entry and then next door to the Condobolin Argus for a quick meeting and then to lunch with Stu and a chat about his new web site (live soon).

By this time is now pushing 12.30 and i have to get my butt to Tamworth, I am hooking up with Tony Blair from Blair Aero Sport to have dinner and stay the night.

that’s all for now ill break this up into a couple of posts over the next couple days, to much for one post.

Websites, Servers and Amazon

last 2 weeks have been a blur, after the meetings in Sydney it just was back to work and playing catch up, still with one web site to finish and one to go live this Monday. then a quick trip out to Griffith for another web client.

Then to a more important part, Servers!! there there for a purpose and have to be done correctly, when they go wrong you have to do your home work , diagnosing is 95% of the work because you can train a monkey to fix it, its getting what went wrong and why has to be done right. with 10 years of program beta testing i have learnt 90% of the issues come from the programs not the hardware, you just have to aks the developer for info and you will find some of the fixes are extremely easy and cheap –  lets not throw the baby out with the bath water !!!

This week i got into work that’s not often done in the web site and some web masters never touch this stuff, Shopping Carts and Newsletter Lists, well we all watch tv and the games shows, best thing you can do is “Dial a Friend ” if you dont know ask some one, well big week learning a heap of new stuff form setting up Amazon SES service for a mailing list and setting up some more shopping carts, thats one industry that needs some standards.

Next couple weeks will some stuff come out of the house of  Upside Down and wow i think its gunna be awesome.

Big Week in the Big Smoke

A week in Sydney was better over school holidays than normal, way less people and able to get around better to suppliers and friends.  Caught with an old work mate, how we dont change, was just like old days “Just Older”

Big Big Big Week

The second job is for  is for a big get together thats coming up in Condo. October long weekend will be a hoot, A Bull Rodeo (PBR)and a Ute weekend. hope to post some info on a nwe web site for this in a day or too.

Fathers day was a hoot, my daughter bought me a awesome JD jacket, another great day. Cheers all , thats it for now

Huge Week

Wow!! what a week, 2 new websites a very close to going live and with a little more effort into these mainly due to the work they do for the wild life up in Qld. they donate a lot of there time for free or extremely cheap costs, the least i could do was really put a big effort in.

1 computer repair that tested the knowledge cells, was not going to beat me but we worked it out and the customer was went away happy. as well as a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) well that was just a rebuild. text book install.

We had a big party for a mates 50th with about 20 of us also with all that came to the party bringing a different dish of food (casserole night) we did not go short on food.

So Lucky They Had A Back Up Plan

A customer from Adelaide on monday morning gave me a phone call, to tell me that he had clicked on a link on a web site and looked like the pc got infected, We did a LogMeIn session (Remote Support) to have a look at what we could do.
Things here where no going well, I had worked out very quicky we need to blow the operating system away and start from scratch, so this lead into a problem.
The customer was a commodity trader and needed to be online ASAP, with a great plan in place we installed a back up image that was done 2 months ago (Nortons Ghost) then to restore the missing trading data we used Carbonite, where all the data was backed up, this is an automatic process that costs less than the price of 2 coffees a month.

The customer at this stage was only down for less than 5 hrs and did not effect his trading, most of the work was done over remote support or a couple phone calls. To rebuild the machine from scratch would of taken more than 2 days due to the complexity of trading programs. this is another great reason why you need to back up in more than one place and have a good back up plan.
